ArborVitae History
In 1972, Patricia Kay formed Problem Pregnancy Help, Inc. to give material aid and support to women facing unexpected pregnancies. The budding organization was housed in Ann Arbor's Father Pat Jackson House. Over the years, Problem Pregnancy Help developed into Pregnancy Help Center, which, at its new location on Packard Rd., continued to offer material support services and also operated a crisis hotline for women. Recently, the Board of Directors responded to the need for crisis pregnancy intervention on the University of Michigan campus by opening an additional location — ArborVitae Women's Center — in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. While Pregnancy Help Center continues to offer its vital services from the Packard Road location, ArborVitae will offer on-site pregnancy testing, ultrasound, and pregnancy consultation to abortion-vulnerable women beginning in the spring of 2008.
ArborVitae: Building hope. Opening doors. Saving lives.

Message from our director
”Where there is no love, put love, and you will find love“ – john of the cross
Welcome to ArborVitae!
I can’t express the joy of all of us here at ArborVitae Women’s Center & Pregnancy Help Center, as we move into new frontiers for proclamation of the Gospel of Life through genuine service to mothers, fathers, and children — born and unborn.
Within the last year, God has brought us many blessings. We have entered the medical services arena by preparing to offer ultrasound services. We have added a key University of Michigan campus location. We’ve also celebrated our organization’s 36th anniversary.
Why the new location? Because we heard God calling us to ”put love“ on the college campus. So here we are: practically on the campus of the University of Michigan, an influential institution with an enrollment of 40,000.
While our longstanding location, Pregnancy Help Center, continues to provide baby supplies, food, and clothing, our new location, ArborVitae Women’s Center, will offer at no charge: pregnancy testing, limited obstetrical ultrasound, pregnancy counseling, referrals, and support, in a non-judgmental, serene and supportive atmosphere.
Imagine yourself as a college freshman, newly away from home. Or perhaps you’re an international student who has traveled thousands of miles for graduate studies. You discover that you are pregnant. How will the father of your baby react? What about your parents? How will you get through your midterms or get to class when you’re always feeling sick? Where will you live? Can you afford school now? What about your internship, your graduation, your career, your future?
No young parent should have to find the answers alone. That’s why we’re here.
Indeed, in answering the call to put love here on the college campus, we have found love – a great outpouring of charity from the community of Southeastern Michigan. Students have stepped forward in support. Local families and organizations have provided volunteers and financial gifts. We are committed to building cooperation with local organizations, businesses, and university departments to provide a life-affirming safety-net for students facing unexpected pregnancies.
I invite you to take part in this infusion of love and life into the college campus and the hearts of mothers, fathers and vulnerable babies.
- Take a look at our mission & vision and consider joining our giving program. Each dollar you give will contribute to saving the life of an innocent unborn child in danger of abortion.
- Registered nurses, counselors, receptionists, office workers, prayer team members – all these unite to form a community of support that emboldens parents to make life-affirming decisions such as parenting and adoption. Consider the rewarding option of volunteering with us so that you can share firsthand in such miracle moments.
- We would love to keep you updated with our newsletter, so don’t go away without signing up!
Thank you again for visiting us online, and please keep our life-giving endeavors in your prayers.
In the peace that surpasses all understanding,
Suzanne Abdalla
Executive Director
